General characteristics of solid wood
Solid wood is a natural product. Variations in colour and different grains represent the natural properties of this material and underline its authenticity. Knots, ingrowths and cracks are part of the wood and do not indicate that the material is of inferior quality. Changes in humidity also change the moisture content of the wood, which results in shrinkage and swelling. As a consequence, glued joints, small dry cracks and bulges on the surface may become slightly apparent. These characteristics are natural and are not grounds for complaint. Wood changes over the years, and this change is an ongoing process. Some woods darken; some fade. Strong sunlight accelerates these processes.

Surface treatment and care tips
We always recommend placing solid wood furniture at an appropriate distance from direct heat sources. During the heating season, you should engage in wood care more frequently than in the more humid summer months. Basically it is important to wipe the table daily with a cloth that is at most slightly damp – or ideally, nearly dry. You should plan the cleaning intervals at your own discretion and opt for overly frequent rather than overly rare cleanings. Care can begin on the first day after setting up the table. The greatest danger is treating a table that has been oiled three times at the factory with too much water, hence washing out the oil base. When the surface has been stressed or seems dry, you should always use the care set and not resort to using a wet cloth or sponge. Cleaning agents should be avoided as a rule: They can damage the open-pored oil surface or even dissolve it completely, making the wood defenceless against everyday influences.

Protective care is the best care and this is where leather needs support. Like the skin of a human being, leather can maintain its characteristics in daily use only with a little help.


Professional as well as regular cleaning and care avoid leather from getting dirty, dry and faded.
Upholstery leather is much more demanding and of higher quality than e.g. shoe leather. It has a more natural finish and its pores are more open to breathe. For this reason, usual all-in-one leather care products are not appropriate and may even harm the leather structure.

Please only use Schotten & Hansen cleaning and care products on the surfaces featured in the Stefan Knopp Edition. Aggressive, alkaline or solvent-based cleaning products can damage the surfaces. Avoid using cleaning sponges, microfiber cloths, metal brushes or similar tools to clean the surfaces. Remove standing water as quickly as possible and protect your wood surfaces against constant moisture.
